GM Showcase joins the YoYo Games family

As we prepare for the launch of our public Beta site, we are pleased to announce that Games Showcase has joined the YoYo Games family. Games Showcase has been supporting the GM community for the last 4 years and we are happy that Thomas (aka snabela) is joining force to make YoYoGames.com the destination site for all GM users, fans and players alike.

The services which until now have been running on http://www.gmshowcase.dk will continue at http://www.yoyogames.com.

When YoYo Games (YYG) beta goes public –i.e. very soon - we will start moving the content from the current GM Showcase server to the YYG server.  All games, comments, reviews, ratings, etc, will be transferred and used in the YYG website which will showcase the best GM games, like GMS does now.

When everything is ready http://www.gmshowcase.dk will start to redirect users to the YYG website http://www.yoyogames.com.

Thomas will continue to test, accept games and will also help organize the reviewer’s team.

“ I would like to thank all of you for your support while we have been known as GMS. I encourage you to move with us to YYG and be as great and supportive as you have been here J. I consider this a great step for GMS and Game Maker in general which is why I agreed to join force with YYG and continue the GMS services over there.”

The Game Maker Showcase has been a very splendid site. Good to see it’s content will not be laid to rest as YoYo Games becomes the major source of GM content.

  2. Daniel-Dane Says:

Never visited the site really, the few times I did was horrifying; so many bad games, well, that is my [bad] taste. :P

P.S. And Thomas is a Dane, muhaha! XD

  3. Joerdgs Says:

    Now that’s progress :)

  4. Medusar Says:

It`s good YoYo will be combined with the GMS. This will make YoYo a larger source of game content.

  5. Yako Says:

This sucks. I have been working as a coder, designer and moderator at the GMS for over 3 years, and I think it’s a shame that such a good community with a wide user base is going to be wasted.

  6. Jls900 Says:

uh oh…i think they threataned to kill snaeblas’s dog if he didnt give them his site…

  7. Dr. Cakey Says:

I just want to know this: is the full site going to be active within the week?

  8. Rusky Says:

    @dr. cakey: prolly not

that’s a nice idea- just don’t put the really bad games on. :P

  9. Greg24 Says:

Daniel-Dane I think you are being too hard on the site - HORRIFYING games ? :D Not all of them and the quality of the games posted there are by far better than what I have seen on GMC so far. This is good news I think.

  10. softhunterdevil Says:

This is a good news keeping in mind:
    1) We need a start, a start with enough number of games
    2) GMS has quite good games and some really cool
    3) Few poor games should be there … which will prove the goodness of the others :D
    4) Another member … who has been with GMC and has good experience of creating a website for showcasing games…. now a part of YOYO team.

  11. JB Says:

The GMS holds many older games, so it’s good that its being preserved for historic reasons alone. I don’t really like the idea of merging them though, I prefer the unofficial forums to the gmc.

  12. Spoony Says:

Transferring the games from the GMS to YoYo Games is illegal; the owners did not give permission for them to be put on there. The decision to merge the 2 sites has been met with absolute disgust at the GMS forums. Every member is leaving and a new community is being started, independent from YoYo Games.

  13. DS Says:

How exactly are you going to justify moving all the content, which was submitted under completely different terms than those of the YoYo Games site? None of the creators ever gave permission for any of it to be used outside of GMS, so you better plan on contacting every single one of them.

  14. Pixelinteractions Says:

Cool. I never was a big GMS fan just because I never went there. It will be good to have some games up on yoyo games soon.
    Excalibur

  15. GMmarine Says:

Sweet, I never was a big GMS fan, time to pull out the old account.

  16. Takagi Says:

    Oy vey. A conglomerate.

  17. LostOverThere Says:

Bah, bad news. Competition is good.

  18. DJD Says:

I was the current other administrator at the time of all of this, and I speak on behalf of the entire GMS community that we all feel betrayed and extremely dissatisfied. I had not too long before taken up the role of fixing the forum considering we had been in a stagnant state. Another administrator had not been active for six weeks and snabela refused to do anything and refused to tell us why. This was the kind of leadership we had, so I took the job up. As a result we were just starting to fix all the problems of the community.

Then this happens. The entire community has been torn apart and we’ve lost virtually everything we’ve been building up and enjoying. The two real main reasons that people came to the showcase was because it had a more family feel. We had a smaller community than the gmc and gmg and that allowed for us to become friends on levels that aren’t achievable in such a large environment that we are now being merged with. The majority of the active members were also there largely in part due to non-gamemaker related content, which is now prohibited within the new yoyogames community.

Worst of all, not a single staff member was alerted and not a single member was questioned before this decision was made. It is the members, not a name, that makes up a community. It is members, and not a single person, that makes up a community. Snabela stood as a false advocate for all of us and made a decision that results in all of us losing the home we’ve gotten used to and enjoyed. There is not a single member on the entire forum that agreed with this decision.

I would like everyone to know the truth about what this merger has done to our community and to think twice before making the decision whether every change that is made is for the good.

DJD I completly share your thoughts and I am backing you up 100 % - I have said it over and over and over on the GMC forum that YoYo game was going to destroy the GMC community and I was right all along - I had so many projects to develop some educational software, applications and extensions to GM and now YoYo is writing up ridiculous policies and basically telling us developers to go shove it - in other words YoYo only wants games and they don’t encourage development which sucks and I too am very disappointed and I can share your feelings and fully understand - I too was led to believe that YoYo would bring something new to GM but I was wrong too, I t hink YoYo will be more of a HOST for games and nothing more, along with severe restrictions even for your own use, hosted on another site. I think YoYo’s intentions were good from the start but I speak for myself, and I’m sure some might agree, so far things have been going downhill and I think that YoYo should have been more prepared and had a site fully ready before merging with GMC and joining you guys. Please don’t put all the GMC in the same basket - The GMC is mostly ridden with 8 to 12 year olds and most of the games uploaded are of pitiful quality - I have seen your site and I can honestly say I like the quality of the games uploaded there, I respect your site. Just wanted you to know you are not alone, some of us GMCers too share your thoughts :D

  20. sandy Says:

I’ve already posted seperately on this topic, but I want to address what Greg24 is aying here as I believe it’s grossly unfair and misrepresents a LOT of what YYG is about…

    1. “YoYo game was going to destroy the GMC community”
    A. We’ve given the community an unrestricted platform to display their games AND OTHER CONTENT. I accept that you may not have wanted that…and I repect your views on thsi…but saying the community has been “destroyed” because YOU don’t like it is ridiculous…just read the positive v negative comments on the GMC since the site launched…you are in the minority…that’s OK with me, but don’t pull the plug on the party because it’s not YOUR gig.

    2. “basically telling us developers to go shove it ”
    A. You must be kidding…? I’ve changed the site T’s and C’s based on feedback from you guys, and I’ve tried to give you some friendly advice that we have developed the technology that will let your games run in a window…you’ll see that in the next few months…this will make a HUGE difference to the number of NON DEVELOPERS who will play the game as they will feel “safer” playing the games this way…I’m not saying DON’T use extensions…I’m trying to say that “safe mode” will have considerable unforeseen advantages for those of you who are keen to get a bigger audience for your games. Ultimately this might mean you can make money from your games on the website if you choose to…but that’s for another lifetime…. :-) If that’s telling you to “shove it” then my middle name is “Confused”.

    3. “YoYo only wants games and they don’t encourage development”
    A. Yes we want games …it’s a GAMES website…duh ? I’m planning to spend $1M developing Game Maker over the next 18 months…that DOESN’T include the money I plan to spend developing the website … and the changes in version 1.1 of the website (summer time) are ALL ABOUT DEVELOPERS !!!!

    4. “The GMC is mostly ridden with 8 to 12 year olds and most of the games uploaded are of pitiful quality …”
    A. Why do you keep on bleating about the kids….leave them alone. Yes…some of the games are poor, but the “grown ups” on this site sometimes write a lot of crap too …….just go to YouTube and tell me that there are 20 Million brilliant videos…?? There are some GREAT games on GMS….we’ve been having brilliant fun in the office looking for staff picks….we measure games on playability and how much fun they are to play…not just great graphics and clever people who can add cut scenes etc….we have over 30 years experience between us in the games industry, so we think we know what makes a great game when we see one….

Greg24..this GLOG stays open for you to say what you want …I will NEVER censor a comment cos I don’t agree with it or whatever….I’m not asking you to shutup…I continue to welcome you here and into the YYG community if you want to be part of it…but I DO ask that you stick to the facts, don’t prejudge us on a site taht has been open for about 4 hours in BETA, and stop dissing the kids as they are part of the community too.

  21. Greg24 Says:

Sandy - maybe you should read the GMC forum, you will see that many share some dislike about YoYo’s new policies. It doesn’t come from me in fact I learned most of that by reading the GMC - Some person pointed out that YoYo will not accept non games, in fact, I read a post from the GMS admin himself, his words, that you take only game submissions. I’m sorry but I think GM can be used to make educational software, quizes and doesn’t strictly have to be RPGs and platform games.

As to your policies, I’m sorry, but based on messages I read here and elsewhere I would feel very uncomfortable publishing my work on YoYo for the reasons outlined above, that you have full rights over submissions and can do what you want with it. I have no problem at all YoYo selling my work, but I would like to get a cut too, it’s only normal. Also, most game submitted would be FREE anyways. You have to expect a lot of unhappy customers, I’m personally MIXED - because I know YoYo means good but so far things are not looking too good, you already managed to pissed off a good community and some users between strict policies and restrictions, DRM, etc… As to investing a million on GM, that’s a lot of money, if it were my money honestly I would be SCARED to spend that much in GM, given the current situation. GM needs a major rewrite it is full of limitations and performance issues, if you want to get a return on your investment, it would be wise to make Game Maker something better than competition, allowing exporting to flash, revamp it, add more feature AND sell it to more people - Just the export to flash itself would sell itself. You guys seem to know what you are doing, good for you, on the one hand you are doing good on the other hand you might lose some people with these little details.

As to kids, I have no problem with that - but the majority are kids - Why can’t GM reach a bigger market ? There are plenty of adults who would like to make games and apps and can’t be arsed with learning C and spending time writing 500 lines of code for something that can be done with a fraction of that - Most of the games released on GMC are of utter crap quality, nothing I would play more than once, other than a few games submitted by moderators / admins and a few regulars….Sorry for being honest but I would be bloody scared to spend a million. I hope you have some secrets you are not telling us about. I really and truely hope it works out for YoYo - please pardon my slight skepticism, based on recent events I think it’s waranted.

  22. Xxypher Says:

    Who is this Michel person!?
    I know no Michel person!

  23. Xxypher Says:

    And nice burn Sandy!

  24. sandy Says:

greg24…thx for your comments. I think you should re-visit the T’s and C’s…I changed them myself… :-) the only right we claim is to use the game on our site and we EXPLICITLY state that we won’t try to sell your game without your permission. Your other comments are noted…and appreciated…seems like you and I are probably not that far apart…of course it’s scary spending all that money…I doubt if the guys who founded Google or Myspace were 100% confident all of the…and neither are we…but I’m having the most exciting time of my career ..and what he hell…I can (just about) afford it :-) I promise you that GM will get better and better…we have a cunning plan, but it all takes time as well as money.

  25. bendodge Says:

I was originally inclined to agree with Greg24, but over the past few days I have been pleasantly surprised. I really like the new site, which provides a far better distribution interface than the GMC. I do agree with others that the GMC’s IPB is better than the YYG forum, but I’m sure it will be improved.

My only complaints about the main site are the fact that you cannot use animated GIF, and and the fact that avatars and such cannot be offsite. I do understand the offsite limitations are for security, but the server is so slooow. I suppose it is probably due to all the submissions being validated.

But overall, the site looks great. :)

  26. sandy Says:

Bendodge….thx for your support…I’m expecting the performance issues to be addressed today sometime.

  27. Greg24 Says:

Ok Sandy like I said in another thread, I will wait and see and I hope to be wrong - I think Game Maker as it is, is far from perfect, so people saying YoYo will kill game maker are not exactly right, GM is dead as it is. GM can be used to make very simple games with minimal resources, but forget about making commercial quality games, EVEN with external resources so I will take you on your offer and see :)
