Nearly There…….

We’re in the final stages of getting the site ready for a full public beta…..I can’t and won’t set a date, as I’ve learned how painful it is to disappoint you all :-( ….but it’s getting close, so keep checking…just don’t keep hitting the refresh button..it’s not that soon !!

I’m sorry if we’ve been very quiet, but we HAVE been busy….

…we’ve HIRED 2 new people to support the community.  Nick MOULDS started yesterday, he’s an IT Specialist and will help manage the website. Clayton SPICER will start next Monday to assist Sophie with customer support issues as well as helping Nick on web admin.

You may also have noticed that the GM Forum is now part of the YYG URL…a small but significant change.

I’ve had the GM7 EULA rewritten as well as the site T’s and C’s tidied up so that they line up more neatly and are more friendly….NOTE…the cjhanges may not please all of you as the purpose of the legalese hasn’t changed hugely, but hopefully they are easier to understand and interpret !  There will also be a sample EULA on the site to be edited and included with your own GM7 titles that you want to distribute…you’ll get all of this with the beta when it launches…

Finally, a big “THANK YOU !!!” from all of us at YYG to the beta testers for your efforts so far…can I ask for one last big push over the next few days to dig out any remaining bugs ?? ..note that feature requests won’t make the public beta release at this stage …

    Just one word …. “WOW”.
    I cant wait anymore.

  2. ce gamer Says:

Does this mean that if the beta site is done, the gamemaker site goes down?

  3. sandy Says:

ce gamer …. 80% of the activity on Gamemaker.nl is the Forum…so that won’t change …just you will reach it from YYG in the near future…most of the rest of the content of gamemaker.nl is already on the live YYG website…there is no pressure to “withdraw” gamemaker.nl…but there will be far fewer reasons to visit it.

  4. Medusar Says:

Can`t wait for the public beta site! It`s good too to hear something new from you guys.

And indeed… DON`T set a date and time deadline for us.

Another question… will there be two yoyogames-forums (one from the gmc and one new) or will they be one together?

  5. Ansgar Says:

I believe there will actually be two forums - the new YoYo Games forum and the old GMC, which will be put into a read-only mode after some time.

Sandy, these are great news, I’m eager to see the beta.

  6. Daniel-Dane Says:

Being a proud pedant I was close to cry when I read your message.

How much have you rewritten the EULA?

    We can wait.
As long as everything works right when you fire the site up, we will be happy.

  11. Bucky24 Says:

Will we have the option to release source code along with our games? (For those of us who use the General Public License)

  12. CJ Master Says:

    Awesome!

*hopes the EULA is better…* :P

    ~CJ :)

  13. benoitr007 Says:

YAY! I just sent you 2 questions/suggestions using the helpdesk. :)

  14. Takagi Says:

Oh joy. Remember to keep us moderators informed on the moderating aspect of the site. [:)]

  15. Greg24 Says:

Sandy what was that about the part where you said that you are ready for TB bandwidth ? Ever since the GMC forum has moved servers it has been horrid! Most of the time I get too many connection sql errors, looks like there needs to be some modifications done because that is very unprofessional and gives a very bad first impression for new members when the first thing they are greeted with is “too many connection error” :D

  16. Michael Brinkley Says:

Too many connections sql errors is the main problem I have had with the Original GMC forums for a quite a while. I get that about once every 6 or so times I try to access it.

I hope the yoyo site ends up being better.

  17. sandy Says:

    Medusar - Yes, 2 forums
Daniel-Dane ..probably not re-written enough for the pedants :-)
    Joerdgs - Chill…
    Takagi - This weekend…no surprises..I hope !
Bucky24 - source code…that’s for the future to do it in a controlled way
    Greg24…any relation to Bucky 24 ??
Greg24 …the GMC is still on the same server :-(…I don’t want to risk any (more) disruption…it will move soon I hope…point noted !

  18. Pixelinteractions Says:

    Hey Sandy
This is a question you don’t have to answer but do you think it will be up by next week………

  19. Crash2108 Says:

So how do you get in on the private beta? I would like to help.

  20. Reuben Says:

    Wouldn’t we all?

  21. Daniel-Dane Says:

Or just wait for the public beta to get released…

  22. Blijbol Says:

Why don’t you post the new EULA on this site?

  23. Andy Says:

It is a privilege to watch the history of Game Maker unfold like this. As for not giving us a date… …Yep that was probably a good idea. =P

  24. Bucky24 Says:

    “Greg24…any relation to Bucky 24 ??”

    I don’t think so….

  25. Greg24 Says:

What a guy uses 24 at the end of his name and he is assumed to be related to me ? 24 is just a random number - Nope Bucky isn’t related to me (thank goodness :D)

  26. Alert Games Says:

Personally, I’m not too excited about the site opening. Though, it would be a lot easier to impress people on the site with my work, and be one of the more respected members.

  27. benoitr007 Says:

“Nope Bucky isn’t related to me (thank goodness :D)” That was mean.

  30. Jord Fan Says:

This is some blog. Somewhere up there is something asking if you think it will be out next week. I would like an answer to that.

  31. Camman Says:

Hey sandy, I have created a video preview of the beta site. Do you care if I post it?

  32. Greg24 Says:

That was a joke you bloody tosspot ! Settle down !

  33. Daniel-Dane Says:

  34. Daniel-Dane Says:

    Uuh. Escape character enabled :].
    <b>Bold</b>

  35. Daniel-Dane Says:

    Who can do that =]

  36. Bucky24 Says:

““Nope Bucky isn’t related to me (thank goodness )” That was mean.”

It was? I wasn’t offended at all.

  37. Medusar Says:

You mean html-symbols? I can, if nothing has changed during the past 2 weeks here. I used italic font 2 weeks ago round here.

    This should be bold

  38. Medusar Says:

    See, it works.

Camman … please take permission and post it … please … thanks in advance.

  40. Dr. Cakey Says:

Oh yeah the s. I’ve been using WAY to much BBCode, hm?

time to find out if it works…

  41. Dr. Cakey Says:

the underline tag does nothing, literally. That was s’posed to be underlined. :D

  42. Daniel-Dane Says:

    @Medusar:
Well, I can see that yours didn’t work out. I have come to this conclusion:
    1. You don’t know what escape characters is
    2. You didn’t write the same as mine. See? Mine is NOT bold!

No, really. It is really simple!

  43. sandy Says:

Takagi - Moderator policy coming tomorow, latest Monday..got the tools today.
Greg24/Michael…GMC performance won’t change for the next few weeks as we aren’t moving the forum to minimise any risk of disruption.
    Pixelinteractions..fingers crossed !
Alert Games…bring it on..get your games uploaded !
Camman ..put it on YouTube :-) just for softhunterdevil if nothing else !

    Sandy

Ps - launch plan in place after today…I’m just not saying when in case something goes wrong at the last moment and we have to delay by a few hours…”It’s all systems go Houston…..T minus 10 and counting…” (I never did understand what this means) :-)

  44. Greg24 Says:

GREAT so now that YoYo is finally launched now you can work on version 8 of game maker - :)

And don’t tell anybody when it’s going to get released, surprise us all….. :)

  45. Pixelinteractions Says:

Cool. I hope it is up soon. It is going to be the best. Now I am going to see if that movie is up….

Nice clip Pixelinteractions, too bad YouTube clips don’t have a high resolution.

And Sandy, can you confirm that this is NOT true:
    http://gmnews.wordpress.com/2007/04/20/yyg-site-terms-preview/

Not that I believe it on the moment. But an official statement on this subject would be more comforting.

  48. Dr. Cakey Says:

    Wait wait wait…

  49. softhunterdevil Says:

@Pixelinteractions …….. thanks you very much:) …for the video.

  50. softhunterdevil Says:

    this is to test underline

  51. Daniel-Dane Says:

    Underlines are not supported.

    Write this: &lt;

  52. Bucky24 Says:

Wow, you guys must be close to release. Main page doesn’t even have logins anymore.

  53. Joerdgs Says:

Yes, it’s gonna happen this weekend! The main page logins are gone like Bucky24 said :)

  54. Iann0036 Says:

AAARG *hitting the refresh button*. If everyone did that the server would overload and then the new site wont come up.NOOO. Just kidding. ANYWAY…I’m still in a quiet protest about having Beast forums as the main “Features” of the original GMC are taken from us. Yay for YoYo, keep up the good work Sandy (and keep us posted).

  55. sandy Says:

Joerdgs .. The T’s and C’s won’t be finished until Monday..so the report is based on stuff on the beta site. And it’s NOT going live this weekend :-(

  56. Joerdgs Says:

Oh, people at YoYo, one thing, DON’T put the GMC in read-only mode before the YoYo forum is better (which means: has all the functions, same amount of server issues (preferably less :), etc.)

  57. Joerdgs Says:

    *hitting refresh button*

  58. Medusar Says:

Daniel-Dane: Yes, sorry, I made a bit of a fool of myself. I realised it some time later and I just didn`t mind to get back here and say it… But I know what escape keys are. Just for you to know :)

  59. Daniel-Dane Says:

    Phew, good. :P

  60. Greg24 Says:

If what is written on that website posted above, in regards to the terms of use, waiving your entire rights to your game, that will spell the death of YoYo from the start - I would like to think that this is probably some scam in an effort to put YYG down, but if it does prove to be true then it is really not good.

ALSO, I think there should be a new rule for game submitters to submit the entire source code (GM6/GMK) file (not for public) but to admins to inspect BEFORE allowing a game to be made public -I just downloaded 3 games from the GMC site and ever since my PC has been acting strange - slowdowns, all shortcut icons on my desktop disappeared, opening or right clicking takes forever, etc…… Some bloody arse bandit put some malicious code in their program to screw registry and you better be sure that when I trace what caused this I will take legal action against the person who is responsible for this.

I urge Mark & YoYo to patch Game Maker to disallow users to modify/delete/screw around with windows / syste files and any critical registry entry that relates to windows system.é

  61. Daniel-Dane Says:

Greg, if so, it would give A LOT of more work for them. I think it should be enough to ask for the source if they find a suspicious game/”game”.

  62. Dr. Cakey Says:

GameMaker does allow access to pretty critical things. Priority, for example. The game priority can be set for realtime and the system is screwed.

    I hope I didn’t give anyone ideas…

  63. Pixelinteractions Says:

Thanks but I didn’t make the movie. I just found it…. and posted the link. Camman made it.
    Excalibur

  64. Greg24 Says:

Dr. Cakey - your example is not harmful - Yes people can modify the priority of the GAME ITSELF, which in a way is not illegal - All you do is ALT-F4, ALT-TAB and delete the process, and you are set. The example I was giving is for users to sneak in commands to delete critical windows files and mess up registry settings.

Ever since I downloaded that game someone posted on GMC I have had general system problems, I forget the name of the game, I had deleted the bloody game, but it was someone who claimed to being from India, it was a very sucky 3D FPS.

There is a tool called PrevX I think it should be included with Game Maker :D

  65. Iann0036 Says:

Hmmm…that is bad. If malicious Game Maker programs are being published then how do you stop that. Best thing to do would be to send only .gmk then let moderators publish it. This would take up some time though. What Daniel-Dane said is not the best thing because like Greg24 said it was hidden in a 3DFPS.

  66. Daniel-Dane Says:

Think about it. I could make a “virus” in batch by just making it delete certain files. Of course the source would be showed but I could execute that file in a million ways. Even “compile” it during run-time. Face it, anything can do harm.

And I don’t recall Game Maker being able to enter real-time priority.

  67. Dr. Cakey Says:

“And I don’t recall Game Maker being able to enter real-time priority.”

Oh yes, it can. I’ve never TRIED (never exactly felt the need to enter real-time…

  68. Dr. Cakey Says:

And yeah, mine was a bad example, but it was the first thing that came to mind and would be easy to implement.

  69. Daniel-Dane Says:

Yeah. Just checked the manual… I wonder why the Windows Joblist doesn’t have the priority -3?
